1:00PM-2:00PM Introduction to the individual counseling skills utilized in intentional interviewing and counseling. The role of individual counseling skills in the assessment process.
2:00PM-2:30PM: The attending skills, open ended questions.
2:30PM-3:00PM: The encouraging skills (paraphrasing, summarizing, reflecting)
3:10-4:00PM: Expressed Empathy. Introduction to Motivational Interviewing.
4:00-4:30: Case study in Motivational Interviewing. Group exercises.
The participant will be able to identify and demonstrate the individual counseling skills including: active listening, paraphrasing, open-ended questions.
The participant will be able to discuss the role of individual counseling skills in the assessment process.
The participant will be able to describe expressed empathy and the role of Motivational Interviewing as an evidenced based approach to addiction treatment.
Workshop will include lectures, a video presentation of a case, group exercises demonstrating the individual counseling skills.
